Rottweilers make good guardians, as these dogs seem to be immune to pain. In fact, many breed owners state that this is the greatest dog for personal protection, police work, obedience, and a number of other activities that require a lot of strength and intelligence on the part of the dog. Despite the fact that the Rottweiler makes a good pet and an affectionate friend for the family, this breed is not for everyone; it requires a lot of training and it is recommended for experienced owners.

The breed has a massive, powerful body and appears to be muscular and athletic. The broad head and rounded forehead are likely to add to the "serious" appearance of the dog. Rottweilers have a well-developed muzzle with a scissors bite. According to the breed standard, the ears of the dog should be triangular and should be carried forward. The nose is usually wide and black, and the eyes are dark.

Future Rottweiler owners should be aware that some dogs are born with rear dewclaws that should be removed at the time when the tail is docked. Rottweilers have a short thick coat that comes in black with brown markings on the cheeks and muzzle, paws and legs. One may choose to buy a puppy of red color with brown markings. Such Rottweilers are not uncommon and their coloring is believed to be due to a deficiency in the hair gene.

Litter Size: The breed has large litters and 12 puppies in a litter are not uncommon.
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years.
