This breed is very hardy and endurable. Its average lifespan is 8-10 years, like in most large breeds. All large breeds are prone to structural problems, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, joint problems, bone and cartilage problems. Retinal problems and bloat occur in some bloodlines of this breed. A number of hereditary disorders are typical of every breed due to a limited gene pool. Most genetically carried malformations can be prevented by screening the breeding stock and culling carriers of defective genes. Puppies should not be over exercised and allowed to jump, because it’s dangerous for their growing bones and joints.
